Despite the new heavy-duty glass, it’s not very difficult to disassemble the iPhone 12
Yesterday, iFixit specialists published a large video with a preliminary disassembly of the iPhone 12 , and today a complete step-by-step description of the process and a rating of maintainability have been published. As we suggested yesterday, the iPhone 12 is really on par with its predecessors in terms of “ease of opening”: smartphones were awarded six points out of ten. This is a very good result for the modern model.
18 magnets, interchangeable batteries and screens, and high maintainability. Complete disassembly of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
During the “autopsy” a lot of interesting things emerged. For example, the display now “opens” from the right edge, while all iPhones since the iPhone 7 have opened from the opposite side. L-shaped batteries no longer exist, they now have the correct rectangular shape.
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro batteries are the same size and capacity – they are interchangeable. Like the screens of these smartphones. And probably the most interesting feature of both devices is the presence of 18 magnets attached to the back panel in the shape of a circle. They secure the MagSafe wireless charger. By the way, experts also disassembled MagSafe, but it’s unlikely to be able to put it back together.
What are the results of the disassembly? Apple has done everything to make it easier to replace the battery and screen. The second positive point is that most components are modular and easily replaceable. The design mainly uses screws to fasten components – and this, of course, is much better and more convenient than glue. However, for disassembly, you will have to take care of a specific tool.
Reinforced measures against water ingress make repairs more difficult, but also provide better protection. The glass of the back panel has become stronger – this is a plus. Yesterday we showed a video in which the iPhone 12 was smashed against a concrete floor as a result of a fall from a great height, and then not on the first attempt . However, if the “rear” glass breaks (and you don’t like its new aesthetics), you will have to remove all the components and replace the entire case. Such repairs will obviously not be cheap.
