Seagate announced this week that the company has begun shipping its 30TB+ Thermal Magnetic Recording (HAMR) hard drives to one of its cloud data center customers.

“We are well on track with our stated plans and reached a key milestone last week by sending initial qualifying units to a cloud launch partner and we are going to recognize initial revenue from platforms of 30TB and above this quarter as part of our Corvault system solutions,” said Dave Mosley, CEO of Seagate.

Revenue recognition means that the actual hardware—Corvault storage systems based on HAMR hard drives 30TB and above—has already been tested by Seagate, purchased, shipped, and is currently being qualified by Seagate customers. Once the qualification is completed, Seagate recognizes the money received as income.

Seagate had high hopes for HAMR technology and has been shipping HAMR-based hard drives to specific customers for evaluation over the years. During the recent earnings report, the company announced that it plans to release the 2nd generation HAMR platform for conventional hard drives in the third quarter.

Seagate originally intended to use HAMR drives and heads to create ultra-premium high performance drives for hyperscale cloud data centers. However, over time, these new media and heads will be used in mid-range and even entry-level high-capacity hard drives to reduce production costs and increase company profitability.
