A New Chapter for the Red Sea Film Foundation

The Red Sea Film Foundation (RSFF), organizer of the prestigious Red Sea International Film Festival (RSIFF) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has announced a leadership update. Mohammed Al Turki, who has served as CEO since the foundation’s inception, will be transitioning to an advisory role. This change comes after a successful tenure marked by significant milestones for the RSFF and Saudi Arabian cinema.

Stepping Up to the Plate: Mohammed Asseri Takes Over as Interim CEO

The press release issued by the RSFF confirms that Mohammed Asseri, a former board member, will assume the role of acting CEO during this period of transition. Asseri’s experience and familiarity with the foundation’s mission will ensure continuity as the search for a permanent successor to Al Turki gets underway.

Celebrating Success at Cannes: A Watershed Moment for Saudi Cinema

The news of Al Turki’s transition coincides with the recent Cannes Film Festival, where the RSFF enjoyed a landmark achievement. Four films supported by the organization – including Tawfik Alzaidi’s “Norah” – were selected for the festival. “Norah,” which had its world premiere at the inaugural RSIFF in December 2021, made history as the first Saudi film ever chosen for the prestigious Cannes Official Selection. This achievement underscores the impact of the RSFF in fostering and promoting Saudi Arabian cinema on a global stage.

A Legacy of Support: Empowering Films Across the Region

Since its establishment, the RSFF has actively supported and empowered filmmakers by providing financial and creative assistance to over 250 projects. These projects originate from not only Saudi Arabia but also the broader Middle East, Africa, and Asia. This commitment to regional diversity has fostered a vibrant cinematic landscape and nurtured emerging voices.

A Time for Gratitude and Looking Ahead

Jomana Alrashid, Chair of the Red Sea Film Foundation, expressed sincere gratitude to Mohammed Al Turki for his pivotal role in leading the RSFF to its current position of strength. Alrashid highlighted the successful execution of three editions of the RSIFF and the foundation’s instrumental contribution to solidifying Saudi Arabia’s presence in the global film industry. She further emphasized her confidence in Al Turki’s continued success as a prominent figure in Saudi Arabian cinema.

Al Turki Reflects on Achievements and Transition

In a statement, Mohammed Al Turki acknowledged the honor and privilege of leading the RSFF through its formative years. He expressed his pride in the many accomplishments achieved during his tenure, including solidifying Saudi Arabia’s position within the global film community. With the upcoming fourth edition of the RSIFF poised for success, Al Turki believes this is the perfect time to transition and pursue other endeavors within the film industry.

Collaborative Spirit: Praising the Foundation’s Guiding Light

Both Al Turki and Alrashid commended the invaluable contributions of Shivani Pandya Malhotra, the RSFF’s Managing Director. Her leadership and dedication have been instrumental in steering the foundation to success.

The Red Sea International Film Festival: A Beacon for Saudi Arabian Cinema

The fourth edition of the highly anticipated Red Sea International Film Festival will be held in Jeddah from December 5th to 14th, 2024. This cinematic celebration promises to showcase a diverse range of films, fostering cultural exchange and further solidifying the RSIFF’s reputation as a premier film festival on the international stage.
