A victim of his own ambitions: Cyberpunk 2077 won not all critics

As expected, December 7 marked not only the start of preloading the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077, but also the publication of the first reviews of the ambitious action RPG CD Projekt RED.

By the time the material was published, the Metacritic aggregator had 43 unique reviews of Cyberpunk 2077, all of which were on PC. The PS4 and Xbox One editions haven’t received any feedback yet.

Due to the lack of reviews for two of the three target platforms featured on Metacritic, the average Cyberpunk 2077 rating is available exclusively for PC – 91 out of 100%.

The PC version of the previous major release CD Projekt RED – the fantasy action game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – at one time was awarded 93% with fewer reviews (32).

Despite the numerical loss to the third “Witcher”, the reviews of Cyberpunk 2077 are still mostly positive: the authors of the reviews praise the graphics, shooting, role-playing component, elaboration of characters, and secondary quests.

Most of the disadvantages of Cyberpunk 2077 are related to the level of expectations from it: to some, the game seemed too daring and too conservative, to others – too short, and to others – offensive in places.

At the same time, all reviewers, without exception, agree that at present the technical component of the project leaves much to be desired: bugs and crashes are so numerous that they seriously spoiled the impression of a number of critics.

The author of the Video Games Chronicle (and dozens of other titles) was not prevented by bugs from giving Cyberpunk 2077 a maximum score: “Atmospheric and stunningly done RPG that raises the bar for cinematic open-world gaming

Journalist Areajugones praised the new game CD Projekt RED by 95%, and compared it with the titans of yesteryear: “If Skyrim and GTA V became a turning point for its genre in the early 2010s, the Cyberpunk 2077 is designed to do the same in 2020, despite the technical flaws “.

A little less impressed was a reviewer from PCGamesN (90%): “Cyberpunk 2077 does not surpass its great sources of inspiration, but Knight City, Johnny Silverhand and a creepy vision of hypercapitalism allow it to defend its territory

An employee of Trusted Reviews was disappointed with the unrealized potential of Cyberpunk 2077, but still gave the project 80%: “Of all the games on the market, this one had to say something, but more often than not it does not

The Gamereactor journalist could not close his eyes to the bugs and limited himself to 70%: “So, on the one hand, we have a story-driven masterpiece and an outstanding single-player game, on the other – a clearly unfinished product

A VentureBeat employee gave Cyberpunk 2077 the lowest of all ratings – 60%. According to the author, CD Projekt RED has turned out to be “a large-budget attraction with exciting quests in a rich setting, but no more

Recall that analysts polled recently by Bloomberg predict Cyberpunk 2077 a little less than 30 million sold copies in the first year from the moment it went on sale.

However, experts noted that critics’ ratings will be an important factor in determining the success of the game: a rating below 90% can cause a negative reaction from fans languishing with expectations.

Cyberpunk 2077 is expected to be released on December 10 on PC (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store), PS4, Xbox One, as well as GeForce Now and Google Stadia. Read about the time of unlocking the game on different platforms in a separate article.
