After selling Huawei P and Mate brands, the company may continue to release only low-cost phones

Two sources familiar with the issue told Reuters at once that the Chinese company Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is negotiating the sale of premium brands of smartphones P and Mate. This could lead to the company ultimately ditching flagship smartphones.

Secret negotiations between the world’s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer and a consortium led by investment firms backed by the Shanghai government have been going on for months. According to one of the sources, Huawei began an internal study of the possibility of selling brands back in September last year.

Shanghai’s government-backed investment firms could form a consortium with Huawei dealers to acquire the Huawei P and Mate brands, similar to the deal with Honor. Huawei is also likely to retain its existing management team for the new venture if the deal goes through.

According to consultancy IDC, Mate and P-series phone shipments from Q3 2019 to Q3 2020 totaled $ 39.7 billion. However, Huawei has yet to make a final sale decision. The deal may very well fail as the company is still trying to produce its own high-performance Kirin SoCs for its smartphones.

Huawei has become aware of rumors of a possible sale of our flagship smartphone brands. Huawei doesn’t have such a plan.
