Researchers from the Washington Institute conducted a survey among scientists involved in artificial intelligence. The results of the work showed that 36% of respondents are sure that the development of AI can lead to catastrophic consequences in this century, for example, a nuclear war or another catastrophe comparable to it in scale. The research team’s work is published in the arXiv preprint repository.
The rest of the scientists are confident that artificial intelligence technologies will become a catalyst for the global industrial revolution, which will inevitably be followed by social upheavals. In addition, 74% of AI researchers believe that private companies have too much influence on this area of science, and 60% called the carbon footprint a big problem: according to them, the development of AI leads to environmental degradation.
Now the preprint must receive peer review, after which publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal may follow.
