All Apple smartphones, starting with iPhone 8, have support for FaceTime video calls in 1080p

Back in November, Apple released iOS 14.2, which brought many new features. However, one of the features was not mentioned in the release notes. We are talking about support for FaceTime video calls in 1080p resolution on iPhone 8 and newer smartphones of the company.

MacMagazine discovered that Apple quietly updated the specification pages for some of its smartphones shortly after the release of iOS 14.2. It was noticed that on the iPhone XR page there was information that the device supports FaceTime HD when connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Previously, this feature was not available. Further research on the Apple website showed that all smartphones of the company, starting with the iPhone 8, received FaceTime support in 1080p resolution.

So after making this software change, when it comes to using FaceTime HD, the iPhone 12’s the only advantage is support for 1080p video calling on 5G cellular networks, which earlier iPhones did not work with. However, due to the lack of 5G coverage, in our reality, this advantage comes to naught.

MacMagazine tests showed a big difference between 1080p and 720p calls on older iPhones.
