But, apparently, in the future, AMD will still accept this standard.

The recently introduced Radeon RX 7800/7700 XT video cards were supposed to be the first AMD adapters with a 12VHPWR power connector. But in the end the company abandoned this idea.

Scott Herkleman, senior vice president and general manager of AMD’s graphics division, said that the new adapters were originally conceived with the 12VHPWR connector. However, the reputation of this connector is still not the best due to stories with the RTX 4090, so AMD changed its mind.

We, in particular, for the 7900 and even 7600 series, did not plan a new power cable, but for the 7800 and 7700 it was planned. We removed it and it was on purpose. You shouldn’t blame end users for your problems. You must identify and accept any problems, just like we did with the vapor chamber problem. I was all over social media because I felt like this was an AMD problem and I was going to take it on.

Until this power issue is fixed and there is confidence that end users are doing everything right, we will not do this. Being able to claim it’s the fault of the end user is a bit weird for AMD and definitely weird for me.

It is worth noting that the hype around the ignition and melting of the 12VHPWR connector has long subsided, however, if you look at the forums, you can find that from time to time some users still encounter this problem.
