AMD now has a processor shortage. Laptop makers complain about the lack of mobile Ryzen

Gaming laptop and desktop company XMG has received notice from its ODM partner regarding issues with Ryzen 4000H processor shipments in Q3 2020. The shipment of orders, which she should have received in mid-August, has been delayed until the end of September. We are talking about a batch of 1600 Ryzen 7 4800H units. XMG contacted AMD representatives, but they only confirmed the existence of a deficit.

The problem is aggravated by the fact that AMD in this situation is not able to change anything. It has no factories of its own and relies on TSMC’s manufacturing facilities. The latter’s clients are also NVIDIA and a number of other large chip makers, so the factories are loaded for several months ahead. This means that AMD cannot increase order volumes to keep up with the level of demand for its processors.

For those customers who, due to a shortage of chips, may not receive the laptops they ordered on time, XMG offers several solutions to the problem. Among them is the replacement of the scarce Ryzen 7 4800H with the Ryzen 5 4600H still in stock with the payment of a compensation of 100 euros to the customer who agreed to such a decision. The alternative is to replace the Ryzen 7 4800H with an Intel Core i7-10750H. And although the Intel processor is about 100 euros more expensive, there will be no additional payment of the difference from the buyer. As for the rest of the brand’s laptops, there are no problems with their supply, XMG stressed.
