AMD will turn to MediaTek for 5G modems and Wi-Fi 6 controllers

In early August, Intel and MediaTek announced the start of shipping samples of 5G T700 modems, which will be used in notebooks based on Intel processors from early next year. This week, Taiwanese sources said AMD is not going to lag behind its rival and is also turning to MediaTek for help.

At first, according to DigiTimes, everything will be limited to the creation of adapted Wi-Fi 6 controllers for systems based on AMD processors. Considering that AMD has serious ambitions in the laptop market, we can count on the subsequent appearance of MediaTek 5G modems aimed at use in systems based on AMD Ryzen processors.

Unlike Intel, which has retained the assets to develop 5G modems for PCs in-house, AMD does not have such potential and therefore depends entirely on third-party suppliers in this regard. Now she is forced to rely on developers of wireless solutions, which are all the same Intel, controlled by Rivet Networks or Realtek. It cannot be ruled out that the first fruits of cooperation between AMD and MediaTek in this area will appear next year.
