Analytics: owners of old Apple smartphones massively change them to the new Apple iPhone SE
Apple unveiled the new iPhone SE on April 15, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. However, this did not stop the device from becoming a real hit in the United States. Like the original iPhone SE, the smartphone combines the platform of the current flagship with the design of previous generations of the company’s devices, and it costs only $ 399.
Although the iPhone SE was released in the second half of April, it accounted for 19% of all iPhone sales in the US for the fiscal quarter that ended June 27. This data was obtained by the American company CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, LLC), which is engaged in market research. Curiously, most of the new smartphone buyers used old Apple phones before changing the device. Among them were mainly the owners of the iPhone 5, 6, and 7, which indicates that these people really waited until Apple released a device suitable for their requirements.
Most of the buyers of the new iPhone SE, obviously, were devoted to iOS, but they were confused by the cost of the current flagships of the company because the cheapest version of the iPhone 11 costs $ 749, and the price of the iPhone XR starts at $ 599. But the smartphone, which costs only $ 399, was able to offer buyers the same chipset as the flagship iPhone 11 Pro while retaining the classic design that many fans of the brand love.
Sales of iPhone 11 and 11 Pro during the study period accounted for 65% of the total number of Apple smartphones sold. Another 8% shared the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 12 family in September, which will be based on the 5nm A14 Bionic processors and boast fifth-generation cellular support.
