Apple bought VR developer Spaces, which was created by Dreamworks

It became known that Apple bought VR startup Spaces, which began its existence as a project by Dreamworks Animation. What role will be assigned to Spaces is still unknown, since Apple representatives refrain from commenting on this issue.

” Apple buys small tech companies from time to time, and we usually don’t discuss related goals and plans, ” an Apple employee commented on the purchase of a VR startup.

Spaces representatives also did not disclose details regarding their future. The company last week announced its intention to “move in a new direction” on its website but did not disclose any details. “ Thanks to our users and partners who took part in our project to create VR tools for video conferencing, as well as to many people who liked our VR entertainment attractions in theme parks, theaters, etc., ” the startup said in a statement.

One of the Spaces’ most significant developments is related to the creation of VR add-ons for the popular video conferencing service Zoom, thanks to which users can conduct conversations using animated avatars. The coronavirus pandemic has had a negative impact on Spaces, the company had to take out a loan and cut staff to try to stay afloat.

As for Apple’s goals, the current acquisition is most likely related to the company’s plans to release its own AR / VR headset. For these purposes, several technology companies working in this area have already been acquired. We are talking about NextVR, Akonia Holographics, and Vrvana. Despite this, until now Apple has not officially announced the development of an AR / VR headset.
