All because of new production problems

Apple is working on a new version of the Apple Watch Ultra that uses a next-generation microLED display, but the device has again been delayed due to new issues, according to research firm Trendforce.

Information provided by analyst Ross Yang in April suggested that the Apple Watch Ultra with microLED display would be released no earlier than the second half of 2025, and not late 2024 as originally thought. Now Trendforce says the watch won’t arrive until Q1 2026 due to high manufacturing cost issues that need to be resolved before Apple can go into mass production.

Over the past decade, Apple has reportedly invested more than $1 billion in its own microLED development to reduce its reliance on Samsung Display and tighten its control over the supply of key components in the display sector.

Apple is already testing microLED displays for the Apple Watch. The Elec reports that the displays have brighter, more vibrant colors and “content looks like it’s been painted on top of glass.” Apple plans to bring this technology to the iPhone and other devices in the future.
