Apple Expands App Options and Customization for EU Users

In response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple is introducing significant changes to its iOS and iPadOS operating systems. These updates will provide EU users with more flexibility and control over their devices.

Expanding Default App Options

One of the most notable changes is the ability for EU users to set non-Apple apps as defaults for a wider range of functions. This includes phone calls, messaging, password management, keyboards, and call spam filters. This feature will be accessible through a new “Default Apps” section in the Settings app.

More Deletable Built-In Apps

Apple will also allow EU users to delete more of its built-in apps, giving them greater control over their device’s app ecosystem. While some core apps like Settings and Phone will remain non-removable, users will be able to delete apps like App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos, and Safari.

Updated Browser Choice Screen

Apple is updating the browser choice screen for EU users to provide more information about third-party browsers and to make it easier for users to switch their default browser. When a user selects a different browser, the Safari icon on their Dock or Home Screen will be replaced with the chosen browser’s icon.

Impact on User Experience

These changes are expected to significantly enhance the user experience for EU users by providing them with more customization options and control over their devices. By allowing users to set non-Apple apps as defaults and delete more built-in apps, Apple is empowering users to personalize their devices according to their preferences.

Compliance with the DMA

Apple’s updates are a direct response to the DMA, which aims to increase competition and consumer choice in the digital market. By implementing these changes, Apple is demonstrating its commitment to complying with EU regulations and providing a more open and competitive ecosystem.
