Apple has patented a new connector that may replace Lightning

According to recurring rumors, Apple plans to abandon the Lightning connector in branded smartphones. Some sources suggest that the company may switch to the mainstream USB-C, but a fresh patent hints that the Californian tech giant could equip branded devices with a new proprietary connector.

Apple’s patent filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office describes a three-pin magnetic charger that connects to a pad on a smartphone or tablet. Unlike the MagSafe introduced with the iPhone 12, the new connector type is designed to fit the device’s edge. MagSafe will likely connect accessories in future devices, and the patented connector will be exclusively for charging.

It’s worth noting that even if Apple does start to equip branded devices with a new port, it will definitely not happen this year. Not long ago, respected analyst Mig-Chi Kuo stated that the 2021 iPhones would continue to feature a Lightning connector.
