Apple is actively working on its own video cards, but they will only be released in a few years.

Apple announced during WWDC 2020 that it will gradually move all Macs from Intel x86 chips to their own ARM-based processors over the next 2 years. There were also hints about abandoning AMD graphics accelerators in favor of proprietary solutions for Mac computers.

Nevertheless, it seems not worth waiting for the imminent appearance of Apple’s high-end graphics accelerators. According to the informant Komiya, the MacBook Pro 16 laptops and all-in-one iMacs, which will be released in 2021 and will use Intel processors, will use AMD Radeon discrete graphics. But computer models based on the new Apple chips will rely on fairly powerful integrated graphics accelerators.

Another informant Jioriku supplemented this publication with the statement that Apple is indeed actively investing in improving its graphics accelerators, but most likely we will not see anything particularly outstanding (for example, Apple video cards for desktop computers) for several years.

After that, Komiya added that around the end of 2021 or mid-2022, Apple will completely abandon Intel processors and AMD video cards in its Macs. Most likely, its integrated graphics will not be more powerful than NVIDIA or AMD offers by then, but Apple will still refuse third-party services. Also, no earlier than 2022, according to the informant, the first discrete Apple video cards may appear.

The modern single-chip Apple A12Z Bionic system bypasses the integrated graphics in AMD Ryzen 5 4500U and Intel Core i7-1065G7 chips in OpenCL tests. Coming this year, the 5nm A14X Bionic chip for future iPad Pro tablets promises to be much more powerful – by some estimates, it will be on par with the 8-core Intel Core i9-9880H. Rumor has it that the first 12-inch ARM-based MacBook expected this year will have a 12-core processor – we will be curious to see what performance such a system can offer.
