Apple is preparing a MacBook Pro with additional ports, MagSafe, new design and no Touch Bar

Apple is working on two new MacBook Pro models with significant design changes, noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF Securities said in a note to investors.

According to the analyst, Apple is preparing to release two models with a screen diagonal of 14 and 16 inches, which will have a flat-edged body “similar to the iPhone 12”, without the curvature of current models. This will be the most significant design update for the MacBook Pro in five years.

The company will abandon the use of the Touch Bar in the new products, returning to the physical function keys. Apple will also bring back the MagSafe charging connector, though it’s not clear what that means since it switched to USB-C. The updated MacBook Pros will have additional ports, and most users may not need to use additional hubs to connect to other devices. Since 2016, Apple MacBook Pro models have only USB-C ports.

It is also reported that the new MacBook Pro models will use only Apple-branded chips – configuration options with Intel processors are not provided.

Kuo predicts the new MacBook Pro models will ship in the third quarter of 2021. The analyst expects that due to the updated design and strong demand, MacBook shipments will grow to 20 million units, which is 25-30% more than last year.
