Although Qualcomm just started working in this direction much earlier
Apple’s launch of its new PCs on its own Apple M1 platform has already seriously wounded the market, and the consequences for the industry will be very significant.
Apple kicked the whole market again. Qualcomm is already working on a response to the Apple M1 SoC.
Of course, such a step by the Cupertino giant could not remain unanswered. For example, the new CEO of Intel has focused on Apple’s move.
Also, it has now become known that Qualcomm wants to release its answer to the Apple M1. The source claims a corresponding single-chip system is already in development. Its catalogue number is SC8280. Presumably, there will be at least two modifications of this SoC: basic and more efficient.
The source even calls the die size of the new SoC – 20 x 17 mm. In comparison, the current Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 platform measures 20 x 15mm. Considering that the new solution is most likely to switch to a 5nm process technology versus the current 7nm process, this hints at an impressive increase in the number of cores.
True, it is unclear how much this will help. Qualcomm has been promoting the Always Connected PC concept for several years, such devices have been sold for a long time, but the demand for them is minimal, and the respective platforms’ performance leaves much to be desired. However, Apple’s move should clearly have a positive effect on this market segment, as well.
