The corresponding project was called Project Fennel. Apple not only thought about this option, but actively worked in this direction. However, in the end the project was closed.
Other business considerations reportedly prevailed. In particular, at some point the Apple Watch became an additional driver of iPhone sales. As a result, Project Fennel was abandoned when the work was almost completed.
