Apple will make upcoming MacBook Air thinner and bring back MagSafe magnetic charging

Apple will make upcoming MacBook Air thinner and bring back MagSafe magnetic charging

Apple is developing a thinner and lighter MacBook Air, Bloomberg reported, citing knowledgeable sources. An updated version of a portable laptop can be released in the second half of this year or early 2022. The novelty will be built on a new generation of Apple’s own processors. In addition, Apple’s MagSafe magnetic charging technology will return.

According to sources, Apple is currently addressing issues related to reducing the size and weight of the updated model while maintaining the diagonal of the 13-inch laptop screen, the frame of which is planned to be made thinner. As a reminder, the current generation MacBook Air weighs 1.29 kg and is 1.61 cm thick.

The publication also added that the company is considering creating a larger, 15-inch version of the MacBook Air. However, sources indicate that this model, in any case, should not be expected as part of the next update to the MacBook Air series.

Apple deprived its ultra-compact MacBook Air of its magnetic MagSafe connector in 2018. At the same time, a special feature of the MagSafe power connector is that the cable connected to it is held in place by magnets. If accidentally touched, the charging cord will simply and safely disconnect for the laptop, rather than pulling the laptop with it. The new MacBook Air model will also receive a pair of USB4 connectors for connecting external devices, according to Bloomberg sources.

The updated MacBook Air will replace the current version of the laptop, built on the basis of the Apple M1 processor. Recall that the last time the company updated the MacBook Air series in November last year when it transferred it from Intel chips to its own processors.
