It’s better not to use only numbers
Artificial intelligence can help not only write an essay or even a thesis, but also crack a password much faster. Data from cybersecurity firm Home Security Heroes shows that a recent AI-based tool, PassGAN, is capable of cracking fairly simple passwords instantly or very quickly.
The company’s research shows that of the 15,680,000 common passwords that were taken for the experiment, AI was able to crack 51% in less than a minute, 65% in less than an hour, 71% in less than a day, and 81% took to crack less than a month.
Artificial intelligence against passwords
The results may seem quite frightening, but not everything is so bad. The fact is that simple passwords are cracked quickly or relatively quickly, especially those consisting of only numbers. If you use letters, then already 10 characters are enough to load PassGAN with work for 5 years. Adding just two will complicate the task by orders of magnitude: the instrument will need 30,000 years.
It is also interesting that, judging by the accessible verification form on the company’s website, password complexity is practically unimportant for PassGAN – only the length matters. That is, a password of 10 characters will be cracked by AI for 5 years, regardless of the presence or absence of numbers, special characters or letters in different registers. The only exceptions are passwords of only numbers – such AI cracks much easier.
