“It can greatly improve people’s communication and communication”

Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke to GQ about why Apple is interested in augmented and virtual reality equipment.

The very idea that you can overlay things from the digital world onto the physical world can greatly improve people’s communication and communication. It can give people the opportunity to achieve what they could not achieve before. The idea is that there is an environment that can be even better than the real world – overlaying a virtual world on top of it can be an even better world. And it’s exciting.

The Apple chief suggested that measuring physical objects and putting digital art on walls is just the start of potential AR use cases, apparently implying there are much bigger possibilities.

Cook told The New Yorker in 2015 that he was very skeptical about smart glasses like Google Glass. At the time, Cook said.

We always thought glasses weren’t the right idea: people wouldn’t really want to wear them. They were intrusive. We always thought the idea was going to fail, and, you know, it has always been that way.

Now Cook is ready to say that he was wrong:

My thinking is always evolving. If you are presented with something new that says you were wrong, you need to admit it and move forward instead of continuing to squat and explain why you are right

Apple’s first headset is expected to be unveiled this year.
