According to him, then the studio planned to release a spin-off with a mercenary in the lead role.

Dorian Kjeken stated: “We studied the concept of the game back in 2008, shortly after the release of [the first] Mass Effect. You were supposed to play as a mercenary like Han Solo in a Star Control-inspired project set in the ME universe. The game was supposed to expand the universe and be created in parallel with the main trilogy

“I love the idea of reincarnating as a gray moral character, like a pirate or smuggler in the Mass Effect universe,” continued the former director of development. – It also allows you to see the world from a different angle, not just through the eyes of a super-soldier. It’s a bit like exploring the Star Wars universe, but not from the perspective of a Jedi or the Warhammer 40K universe without being a Space Marine

According to Dorian Kjeken, the described protagonist would allow one to see and study the factions not previously shown in Mass Effect. He also compared the canceled offshoot to Firefly and The Mandalorian.
