Bosch chairman urged to take a sober look at the environmental impact of electric vehicles

The governments of many states’ plans in a few years to completely ban the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines are criticized not only by major automakers but also by their partners producing auto components. The latter has recently been joined by Bosch, one of the oldest and largest players on the market.

The position of Toyota, which pays much less attention to the production of electric vehicles than competitors, can be understood – the Japanese manufacturer has invested enormous funds in developing hybrids and sees hydrogen as an alternative fuel. According to the German newspaper Stuttgarter Nachrichten , the chairman of the board of directors of Bosch Franz Fehrenbach expressed dissatisfaction with the emerging policy of double standards in relation to cars with internal combustion engines and electric motors. According to him, greenhouse gas emissions from the generation of electricity and batteries are not taken into account when assessing the impact of electric vehicles on the environment, and this cannot be considered a fair position.

The head of the Bosch board of directors also expressed concern that for the ease of operation of electric vehicles, it is necessary to invest huge amounts of money in the development of a network of charging stations. He estimates that at least one million electric vehicle charging points need to be built in Germany alone.

It remains to be recalled that Bosch has been making an effort to invest in solid-state battery cells since 2017 by acquiring the fledgling Seeo Inc. Already in 2018, the German giant abandoned plans to develop this business, recognizing it as too risky. But in the field of creating hydrogen fuel cells, Bosch cooperates with several companies at once, including Nikola Motors. The German manufacturer does not refuse to improve traction motors either.
