Capcom Hasn’t Learned from Dragon’s Dogma 2

Monster Hunter Wilds, one of Capcom’s most anticipated titles, is facing severe technical issues despite two patches aimed at addressing them. While the game has enjoyed massive commercial success, players continue to report frustrating performance problems, including frame rate drops, VRAM overload, and graphical inconsistencies. These issues mirror the troubled launch of Dragon’s Dogma 2, raising concerns about Capcom’s approach to game development and optimization.

Monster Hunter Wilds Suffers from Poor Optimization

Despite Capcom’s reputation for delivering high-quality games, Monster Hunter Wilds has launched with significant technical setbacks. Even after multiple patches, the game’s optimization remains a glaring problem.

Severe Frame Rate Drops and Performance Issues

Many players, including those with high-end PCs, are struggling with poor performance. Reports indicate:

  • Inconsistent FPS: Even with powerful GPUs like the RTX 4080, frame rates fluctuate drastically.
  • VRAM Overload: The game consumes excessive VRAM, causing stuttering and crashes.
  • Graphical Downgrades: On medium settings, visuals resemble those of the PlayStation 3 era.

Progression-Hindering Bugs and Glitches

Several game-breaking bugs have been reported, affecting both single-player and multiplayer experiences:

  • Invisible NPCs in “A World Turned Upside Down” (Chapter 5-2): Preventing progression.
  • Characters Falling Under the Map in Chapter 2-1 “Toward Fervent Fields”: Breaking immersion and forcing restarts.
  • Texture Pop-ins and Unresponsive Controls: Adding to the frustration of an already flawed experience.

Capcom’s Response: Patch 1.0.04 and Its Limitations

Capcom released patch 1.0.04, aiming to fix some of the most pressing issues. Here’s what the update addressed:

  • Fixed NPC spawn issues in “A World Turned Upside Down.”
  • Resolved the glitch causing characters to fall through the map.
  • Minor adjustments to overall stability.

However, these fixes barely scratch the surface of the game’s problems. Optimization remains virtually unchanged, leaving many players questioning whether Capcom is prioritizing performance or simply relying on post-launch fixes to patch up an unfinished product.

A Recurring Problem: Parallels with Dragon’s Dogma 2

The situation surrounding Monster Hunter Wilds is eerily similar to that of Dragon’s Dogma 2, which launched in a poor technical state. That game also suffered from severe frame rate drops, excessive VRAM usage, and game-breaking bugs. Despite strong sales, the backlash from players was immense.

Capcom appears to be following the same cycle:

  1. Releasing an unfinished game with severe performance issues.
  2. Fixing critical bugs post-launch but leaving optimization largely unaddressed.
  3. Relying on fan loyalty to sustain sales despite negative feedback.

The Impact on the Gaming Community

The frustration among gamers is growing, with many voicing concerns on platforms like Reddit, Twitter, and YouTube. Popular gaming channels are highlighting the game’s performance flaws, urging Capcom to take optimization seriously. Some players are even demanding refunds, feeling misled by pre-launch marketing that showcased a much smoother experience.

What Needs to be Fixed in Monster Hunter Wilds?

To regain the trust of its player base, Capcom must address the following issues urgently:

1. Proper Optimization for PC

  • Improve GPU utilization to reduce unnecessary VRAM consumption.
  • Stabilize FPS to avoid constant fluctuations.
  • Implement better graphical settings that do not downgrade visuals drastically on medium settings.

2. Bug Fixes and Stability Enhancements

  • Fix game-breaking glitches that hinder progression.
  • Improve hitbox accuracy and collision detection.
  • Resolve texture loading issues and pop-ins.

3. Transparent Communication

  • Provide regular updates on ongoing fixes.
  • Address community concerns directly instead of vague patch notes.
  • Offer a timeline for major performance improvements.
