Chinese authorities block the trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War due to footage from Tiananmen Square

Last week, Activision Blizzard released a trailer for the shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which will be fully unveiled tomorrow, August 26th. The video consisted of footage of a wide variety of events that took place during the Cold War era. Since then, the trailer has been banned in China as it includes footage from the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.

The video shows a clash between protesters and the military in the Tiananmen Square area in Beijing. Despite the fact that the footage was in the trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War for less than a second (at 1:05), the video was sharply criticized by users of China (some even accused the developers of propaganda), and then the video was blocked by the authorities. Later, an edited trailer was released, where the scandalous footage was replaced by a black screen, although the sound remained.

The Tiananmen Square protest was part of a larger pro-democracy movement that ended in the June 4, 1989 massacre. Armed detachments of the People’s Liberation Army of China marched across the square with tanks and fired at the protesters.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the sixth installment in the Black Ops sub-series from Treyarch and Raven Software. The game is set during the Cold War. Recently, the details of the storyline campaign of the shooter have leaked online. The project is rumored to go on sale on November 13 on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
