Camera sales have slightly increased compared to July

Japan’s CIPA Camera Manufacturers Association, which unites Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Ricoh, Sony, and other photographic equipment companies, has released data on sales of digital cameras and interchangeable lenses for August this year. Statistics show that sales increased slightly compared to July – by 4.2%. However, seasonal growth was also observed in previous years, but in annual terms the picture is bleak.
To be more precise, 683 933 digital cameras were sold during the month, while in July – 656 604. However, this is only 52.6% of sales in August last year. By the way, the July figure was 56.3%.
Sales of cameras with interchangeable lenses for the month increased from 349,280 to 398,067 units, but the second figure is only 56.7% of the figure for August last year. Sales of compact cameras for the month decreased from 307 324 to 285 866 units, which is equal to 47.8% of the indicator for August last year.
The number of interchangeable lenses sold in the first eight months of the year was approximately 1.82 units per camera sold. Interestingly, the figure for the same period in 2019 was 1.72.
Mirrorless cameras account for 52.2% of all interchangeable lens camera sales in terms of quantity and 66.6% in value terms. In other words, mirrorless cameras are on average noticeably more expensive than DSLRs.
