Cyberpunk 2077 was too tough for GeForce RTX 3090 in 8K: 30 fps with ray tracing and 6 fps without DLSS

NVIDIA previously announced that its flagship graphics accelerator, the GeForce RTX 3090, is the first graphics card capable of handling 8K gaming. TweakTown has pulled together all the pieces needed to test this claim: a powerful Intel Core i9-10900K gaming PC with 32GB of RAM and an 8K display, MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Suprim X graphics accelerator and Cyberpunk 2077.

As it turned out, without using proprietary DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) technology, NVIDIA’s statement regarding the GeForce RTX 3090 and Cyberpunk 2077 does not work. Even with anti-aliasing and deep learning algorithms, the number of frames provided by NVIDIA’s flagship graphics solution cannot be called acceptable for a comfortable 8K game. At least for a $ 1500 video card.

TweakTown tests were carried out taking into account different scenarios, but with maximum graphics settings. First, we tested the capabilities of a video card with an active DLSS function, which, using AI algorithms, reduces the resolution of the image on the screen (to about 1440p), and then scales it to the display resolution. The journalists then tested it using the display’s natural resolution without DLSS active. The test also used the Ray-traced lighting parameter. It was either set to “incredible” or turned off completely.

With DLSS active in Maximum Performance mode and RTX lighting turned off, the maximum was 38 fps. With ray tracing enabled, performance dropped to 30.6 fps. With active ray tracing, the total consumption of video memory was 13.7 GB, without it – 11.7 GB. When using DLSS in the “quality” mode, the amount of consumed video memory increased to 17.4 GB.

Without DLSS active, the game was more like a slideshow, showing an average of 6.6 fps at 8K resolution. The consumption of video memory has increased to 23 GB, which barely fits into the declared characteristics of the video card itself. Disabling ray tracing increased the rate to 10 fps and reduced memory consumption to 21 GB.

Cyberpunk 2077 turned out to be so unoptimized and demanding on computer resources that the final test results of TweakTown cannot be compared with the official performance graphs of the GeForce RTX 3090 at 8K resolution in other projects.

However, it is worth highlighting Control, in which the GeForce RTX 3090 was able to show 8 frames / s without the DLSS function enabled.
