Developer Kena: Bridge of Spirits talks about the game’s connection to Bali culture

Kena: Bridge of Spirits was introduced last year and continues to impress visually every time new screenshots are released. The history and the world of the project are definitely inspired by oriental culture, which was recently confirmed by the developers themselves.

In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine (February 2021), Ember Lab co-founder Josh Grier talked about Kena: Bridge of Spirits’ connection to Eastern culture – Bali in particular.

“Our understanding and familiarity with Balinese culture happened only after we started working with the Çudamani ensemble,” said Grier. – Our composer Jason [Gallati] approached the Çudamani with the hope of incorporating their musical style and traditional instruments into the soundtrack. Jason spent a lot of time with the Çudamani team to develop interactions that would bring their music into the game. Through the work of [with Çudamani], we discovered that the incredible Balinese culture fits into the core concept of the game: helping trapped and suffering spirits move on. Music is an important part of this process in Balinese culture and our collaboration with Çudamani has helped us reflect this in an organic way

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is an action-adventure about a young spiritual mentor Ken, who uses her magical abilities to help deceased people move from the physical world to the spiritual. The game will be released this year on PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
