Diablo creator says he hasn’t received royalties for his brand since he left Blizzard

On the occasion of Diablo II‘s announcement: Resurrected, users decided to inquire whether co-founder and former President of Blizzard North David Brevik will receive royalties from the game’s sales. It is he who is behind the creation of the first two parts of the famous franchise. In his reply, the ex-executive stated that he does not receive any royalties from Diablo sales. And for the upcoming remaster, he is also not entitled to a fee.

In a personal microblog, David Brevik wrote: “I haven’t made anything on Diablo since I left Blizzard in 2003. I do not receive royalties. They are rarely paid out in the gaming industry. Although this is not entirely true – one person during my speech at GDC 2016 paid me for a pirated copy of the game he downloaded a long time ago. So … [I earned] $ 40? “

It is worth clarifying that usually deductions from product sales are paid to copyright owners or if this condition is spelled out in an agreement with a specific person. David Brevik does not appear to have entered into Blizzard’s agreement regarding royalties on any Diablo branded product. If so, the company owes nothing to the former executive.

Diablo II: Resurrected will be released in 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Series S.
