Digital Foundry: Xbox Series X version of Gears 5 will appeal to fans of the game, but “for the rest it will not change anything”

Digital Foundry specialist John Linneman published a technical analysis of the Xbox Series X version of the action movie Gears 5 on the Eurogamer website and the YouTube channel, which will be available simultaneously with the console.

According to Linnemann, on the new Microsoft console, the game runs in dynamic resolution: most often the indicator is kept at around 1728p, but it can go up to 2160p (4K) and, much less often, go down to 1080p.

There is no Xbox Series S in the Digital Foundry edition yet, but on this console, according to Microsoft, Gears 5 will be able to deliver up to 1440p. The lower bar, according to the publication, will be at 720p.

As for the performance, it is almost complete order with it on the Xbox Series X: sometimes the game delays the frame on the screen a little longer than necessary, which creates a feeling of slowdown, but the developers already know about the problem.

In other cases, Gears 5 for Xbox Series X demonstrates in 99% of cases a stable 60 fps in the story campaign and the promised 120 fps in the multiplayer component.

In addition, the team at The Coalition has managed to significantly reduce input lag, making Gears 5 noticeably more responsive. The authors talked about this advantage of the Xbox Series X version in October.

Even though Gears 5 does not take advantage of the Xbox Velocity architecture, the game loads significantly faster on the Xbox Series X than on the Xbox One X: more often than not, the usual wait is no more than 10 seconds.

As promised, Gears 5 on Xbox Series X looks as good as the PC version at max settings. The console edition will also offer global screen space lighting, which is not yet available on PC.

“Ultimately, the revamped Gears 5 is a welcome improvement on an already great game. It does not change the design, of course: if you liked the original release, you will probably like this one even more, but for the rest, [the upgrade] will not change anything. However, the visual enhancements are great, ” Linnemann concluded.
