DOOM Eternal brings in $ 450 million in revenue in first nine months

Bethesda Softworks did not disclose sales figures for  DOOM Eternal. However, some information was obtained thanks to the former id Software product manager. David Saunders pointed out that the shooter generated $ 450 million in revenue in the first nine months on his resume on LinkedIn.

Users of the ResetEra forum drew attention to such a detail in the employee’s resume. Saunders noted that he worked at id Software from 2017 to 2020 and was responsible for ” developing KPI (Key Performance Indicators) systems and software testing,  game monetization, gaming economy issues, analytics, product roadmaps, and other responsibilities” Previously, he worked at Electronic Arts (Lead Game Designer for Mobile Heroes of Dragon Age) and now holds Product Manager’s position at Gearbox Software.

DOOM Eternal has no micropayments, so the revenue metric only describes game sales. When you consider the discounts that appeared in the first nine months, they probably exceeded 10 million copies. This is an impressive result for a single-player game with an emphasis on a story campaign.

Saunders later changed the information, indicating that he took the data from the report of the analytical firm SuperData. In January, the latter reported that DOOM Eternal had revenue of $ 454 million last year. It is noteworthy that it was only about sales of digital copies. Earlier, analysts from the same company estimated that in March 2020, sales of the shooter reached 3 million copies. This is three times more than the predecessor had in the release month (957 thousand units).

According to Bethesda Softworks, DOOM Eternal set a record for the series’ sales in its first weekend, 2.5x higher than  2016 DOOM over the same period. On the first day, the game gathered over 100 thousand concurrent users on  Steam.

DOOM Eternal was released on March 20, 2020, on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and on December 8 on Nintendo Switch. On October 20, the first part of the standalone expansion, The Ancient Gods, appeared on all target platforms. The second is expected this year – given that it has already received an age rating in Australia, the release will take place soon. By the end of this year, the shooter will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and S with free improvements for owners of versions for previous generation consoles.
