He’s made similar promises before.

Tesla is set to reach the fully self-driving car stage again “later this year,” CEO Elon Musk announced today, July 6.

“In terms of where Tesla is at this stage, I think we are very close to achieving full autonomous driving without human supervision,” Musk said via video link at the opening ceremony of the AI conference in Shanghai.

“This is just a guess, but I think we will achieve full autonomous driving, level four or five autopilot, I think, later this year,” the billionaire added.

Now Tesla has implemented a second-level autopilot. Level 3 autopilot means that the driver can completely let go of the steering wheel and go about their business, but still be ready to take control at any time. The fourth level is a full-fledged autopilot, but with markings. The fifth level no longer requires markup.

The billionaire admitted he was wrong about previous predictions regarding this timeline, but added: “I feel like we’re closer than ever.”

Musk said last summer that fully self-driving Teslas would be available by the end of 2022. And before that, he promised such cars even earlier.
