“It’s like finding a magical genie who will fulfill your every wish, and there can be an infinite number of wishes.”
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, CTO of X and owner of newly formed artificial intelligence startup xAI, said artificial intelligence (AI) will have the potential to become “the most disruptive force in history.”
“We will have something that, for the first time, will be smarter than the smartest person,” Musk said at an event at Lancaster House, the official seat of the British government.
“It’s hard to say exactly what that point is, but there will come a point when people are no longer needed for work. You will be able to find a job if you want to have a job for personal satisfaction. But AI can do everything. I don’t know how comfortable people will be with this. It’s like finding a magical genie who will fulfill your every wish, and there can be an infinite number of wishes.”
Elon Musk spoke about AI
Musk has repeatedly warned about the threats AI poses to humanity, once saying it could be more dangerous than nuclear weapons. He was one of many technology leaders who, in a widely cited open letter published earlier this year, called for halting the development of artificial intelligence better than GPT-4.
Musk’s announcement came at a summit that technologists and political leaders used to warn about existential threats from AI, focusing on some possible doomsday scenarios.
At the summit, the US and China agreed to find global consensus on how to tackle some of the most challenging issues surrounding AI, including how to safely develop and regulate it.
