Epic Offers Sony $ 200M for Exclusive PlayStation Games on Epic Games Store
New details have emerged in the Epic Games v Apple case. It turns out that the owner of the digital Epic Games Store was offering Sony Interactive Entertainment $ 200 million for the exclusivity of PlayStation games.
It is unknown what kind of deal Epic Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment may have reached, as the document in question was drawn up before any agreement. It said Epic had offered Sony a “minimum guarantee of $ 200 million for 4-6 games” and was awaiting a response. The “Minimum Guarantee” is the amount that Epic Games guarantees to the publisher of the projects whether the game earns that money in the store or not.
So far, only two games from Sony Interactive Entertainment have been released exclusively on the Epic Games Store: ReadySet Heroes and Predator: Hunting Grounds. It is currently unknown how much Epic Games paid to host these games exclusively on its store. ReadySet Heroes, by the way, is still an exclusive on the Epic Games Store, while Predator: Hunting Grounds is already out on Steam (a year after the release on EGS).
Other Sony Interactive Entertainment games are also available on the Epic Games Store, but they are not exclusive. Horizon Zero Dawn was released simultaneously on EGS and Steam. Days Gone’s upcoming PC launch won’t be exclusive either.
In addition, it became known that Epic Games was reaching out to other platform holders. The company noted in docs that the head of Xbox Game Pass for PC didn’t like what Epic had in mind with their store. In addition, Microsoft viewed Epic as a competitor. It also states that Xbox boss Phil Spencer and Valve boss Gabe Newell were having meetings.
Apparently, they paid off because Microsoft openly supported Valve and started putting its games on Steam, including Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Forza Horizon 4.
When it comes to buying Nintendo games from the Epic Games Store, it looks like Epic didn’t even try. The document describes the idea as “failed.”
