The company collects too much personal data from users

After several users in Europe complained about being unable to access the Threads app via VPN, Meta* confirmed that it was blocking such attempts.

The company launched Threads last week, but due to privacy concerns, the app is not available in the EU. The company said in a statement that it has taken additional measures to prevent users from accessing the new social app.

“The Threads app is currently not available in most of Europe and we have taken additional steps to ensure that people there are not yet able to access it. Europe continues to be an incredibly important market for Meta* and we look forward to making the Threads app available here in the future,” the company said in a statement.

The Threads app tracks users extensively, collecting information such as health and financial data, precise location, browsing history, contacts, and search history. This approach creates legal and regulatory problems for Meta* in the EU. In accordance with EU data protection law, Meta* needs a legal basis for the lawful processing of such personal data for ad targeting.

The Threads app quickly passed the 100 million user mark, but then the number of daily active users decreased by 20%, and the time spent in the application was halved.
