The corresponding firmware update can be installed only in the service center

Canon has released firmware for the EOS R camera, which may be of interest to those who use or plan to use this camera for animation. $ 100 firmware, for installation of which you need to contact a Canon service center, adds a number of functions that make shooting easier, especially using the Dragonframe animation application. At the same time, the EOS R option with the firmware already installed was available. It costs 1899 – about 100 more than the regular version.

The main advantage of the new firmware for animators is the increased preview resolution when connecting the camera via USB. Without new firmware, the camera displays an image of 960 x 640 pixels, and with it – 1920 x 1280 pixels. This resolution is higher than any other Dragonframe compatible camera. The higher resolution makes it easier to check image details and focus.

The update has its drawbacks. In particular, the HDMI output will be disabled, as will access to the display settings. Focus picking becomes available via USB, but it no longer works in the viewfinder or on the camera’s display if the EF-S lens is used, multiple exposure mode, crop mode, zoom mode on the screen is selected or when you continue to hold the shutter button after shooting.
