Ford’s second electric car for the European market will be built on the Volkswagen platform

This year, Ford Motor is slated to begin sales in Europe of the Mach-E electric crossover, originally designed with electric traction. The American manufacturer can build the second model of a purebred electric car for the European market on the Volkswagen platform, and it will be produced in Germany.

According to Bloomberg, Ford Motor is close to deciding on Volkswagen’s MEB platform as the basis for a new electric vehicle model, which will be offered to European buyers from 2023. Production is planned to be established in Cologne, Germany. The parties are to sign an agreement in the coming weeks.

The current head of Ford, Jim Farley, during his previous role, contributed to the formation of an alliance with Volkswagen in the production of light commercial vehicles in 2018. To date, the cooperation between the companies has expanded to electric vehicles and transport control automation technologies.

The unification of the platform with Volkswagen will allow Ford to save money on developing its own electric vehicles for the European market, where customer preferences differ from those of the American audience. At the same time, there is no need to talk about Ford’s complete abandonment of its own platforms in Europe. The company will spend $ 300 million to prepare to produce a new commercial vehicle in Romania. It will also have an all-electric version that does not use the Volkswagen platform. The novelty will enter the local market in 2024. The German partner’s MEB platform is at the heart of the increasingly popular electric vehicles of the ID family.
