GeForce RTX 3090 will indeed receive 24 GB of GDDR6X, but the GeForce RTX 3080 only 10 GB

There are only a few days left until the official announcement of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards. Thanks to rumors, we already know many of their characteristics, and now the VideoCardz resource, with reference to its own sources in the ranks of video card manufacturers, has confirmed information about the amount of video memory of older video cards of the new generation.

It is reported that the GeForce RTX 3080 will receive 10 GB of GDDR6X RAM with a 320-bit bus. In turn, the flagship GeForce RTX 3090 will receive more than twice as much – 24 GB of memory of the same type with a 384-bit bus. In both cases, the memory will have an effective frequency of at least 19 Gb / s.

Such a big difference in the amount of memory in the future will allow NVIDIA to successfully fit the conditional GeForce RTX 3080 Ti or RTX 3080 Super between these models, for example, with 16 GB of memory. Also note that the Titan RTX now has the same 24 GB of RAM, so it is likely that NVIDIA will position the new GeForce RTX 3090 more as a professional solution than a gaming one.

Note that the information about the availability of 24 GB of memory in the flagship GeForce RTX 3090 is confirmed by the image that appeared a few days ago. Then, on the Reddit forum, a photo of a printed circuit board was published, supposedly an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 accelerator based on the Ampere architecture.

The source reported that the printed circuit board is from Colorful’s custom graphics card, which will hit the market under the iGame GeForce RTX 3090 Vulcan-X brand. The informant blurred some areas of the board, since some of the details, he said, are classified and cannot be published by him. Reddit moderators removed the original post due to too many parts of the board being blurred, but the source did not give up and posted a new photo in which fewer parts of the photo were blurred.

If you believe this picture of the backside of the printed circuit board, it turns out that the power of all components of the future video card is provided by three 8-pin connectors. At the same time, rumors of a 12-pin  power connector have recently been confirmed. Perhaps not all manufacturers will use them.

The photo shows at least 11 Micron memory modules. Historically, cards with dual-sided memory chips have the same number of chips on either side. Having carefully studied the pictures, you can see that the given board actually contains 24 chips (that is, 24 GB with a 384-bit bus) – we simply do not see the M506 module (it is covered, but the inscription can be disassembled if you look closely):

Two other interesting details of the board are the interface, which definitely doesn’t look like the standard NVLINK found in existing RTX 20 series cards – is it just an updated version?

The informant put the Intel processor on top of the board to cover something. According to him, NVIDIA is going to supplement the main GPU with a separate chip – perhaps it will be an accelerator for specific workloads, but so far these are only assumptions. You will also notice full PCIe 4.0 support and improved power delivery to some PCB components.

NVIDIA is expected to unveil at least two new graphics cards on September 1, including the GeForce RTX 3090 and GeForce RTX 3080. There is also a possibility that NVIDIA will announce the GeForce RTX 3070 graphics cards, but for now, they are expected to launch in October.

The timing of the start of sales of some upcoming new products was also found out. The reference GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition is reported to go on sale on September 21. And after another week, it will be possible to buy custom versions of this video card from NVIDIA AIB partners.
