“Get out, monster!”: The main character of Hades could be her most annoying boss

Supergiant Games co-founder Amir Rao spoke to The Verge at the Clubhouse about ideas discussed early in the development of  Hades. As it turned out, initially, the developers wanted to make Theseus the protagonist – an arrogant hero who eventually became one of the bosses in the game.

Hades is one of the most highly rated games of the past year. As of mid-September 2020, the project has sold over 1 million copies on PC and Nintendo Switch. The game’s main character is the immortal prince of the underworld Zagreus, the son of Hades, who is trying to escape from his father’s kingdom. But it was not always so. Apparently, earlier the project was conceived as a retelling of Theseus and the Minotaur myth, and the players had to take the hero out of the labyrinth of Minos.

But one day, Hade’s creative director Greg Kasavin changed the plot of the game. He made Zagreus the main character, and Theseus – a daring antagonist, with whom he will have to fight again and again. The developers feared that if Theseus remained the protagonist, the game would ultimately not stand out from the others.

According to Rao, Kasavin’s idea did not require large-scale changes, and the team took it “in a day or two” Since then, the creative director began to study Zagreus – the son of the god of the dead – and everything fell into place: a “life” family tone took root in the game, and the general atmosphere became lighter.

In the end, Theseus was rewritten from a simple protagonist to a grand and arrogant boss that can be seen in Hades now. “His rough side is something that I think is deeply rooted in the mythology about him,” Kasavin said. – Why not? After all, Theseus is arrogant, single-minded, and determined, which makes him the perfect complement to our Zag.

Hades was only released on PC and Nintendo Switch.
