Google banned the game Attentat 1942 in World War II for “propaganda of Nazism”

Google has banned the game Attentat 1942 ( 93% positive response on Steam at 113 ratings), which is declared as a historically accurate project in the setting of World War II, from the Google Play store for a number of regions, including Germany, Russia, Austria, and France.

Attentat 1942, developed by Charles Games in collaboration with historians from the Czech Academy of Sciences, is a game that aims to show the horrors of war in a sincere and dark manner. Back in 2018, the project was nominated for the Outstanding Achievement in Narrative Award at the GDC Independent Games Festival. However, Charles Games faced unexpected difficulties in porting the game to mobile devices due to Google Play policies.

“Google rejected Attentat 1942 because of the Nazi references,” the report said. “ After all the hard work, numerous emails, approvals from the German regulatory authorities, we are disappointed. How are we supposed to make a historically accurate WWII horror game without the Nazis? We do not know”.

The team also noted that it spent six months porting the game from PC to mobile devices, but it is now blocked in at least four regions of Google Play. According to the project thread, the Norwegian game My Child Lebensborn had similar issues with Google Play rules.

According to Charles Games, their brainchild is a categorically anti-fascist project: “We agree that stores and platforms have to deal with misanthropic material, but if the reviewers were even a little more careful about Attentat 1942, they would know that this is not about us, the tweet says. “Attentat 1942 is a decidedly anti-fascist project

Shortly thereafter, Charles Games posted a tweet showing a screenshot of a Google spokesman saying they could not provide a more definitive explanation for why the game was banned and why all appeals were passed over on deaf ears.

Fortunately for Charles Games, Google Czech did respond to the situation: “ Google Czech contacted us. We talked and they promised to look into the Attentat 1942 Play Store ban. Let’s stay cautiously optimistic. “
