Google lowers RAM consumption in Chrome 89 for Windows, macOS and Android

Google Chrome has long been criticized for overusing RAM. It turned out that Chrome 89, released earlier this month, had enhancements to reduce resource consumption and speed up the browser. These changes affect the latest browser version for Windows, macOS, and Android platforms but do not affect its iOS version.

According to the available data, depending on the platform, Chrome can free up to 100 MB of memory per tab, which in some cases is 20%. On macOS, it saves up to 8% of the memory used. Chrome for macOS has also made changes to improve its Energy Impact score for background pages by up to 65%, which, according to the company, ” keeps your Mac cooler and your fans quieter .”

On Windows and Android, the browser uses a more advanced memory allocation method to reduce memory consumption and improve performance. On Windows, according to Google, there are significant memory savings: up to 22% in the browser process, up to 8% in the renderer, up to 3% in the GPU. Overall browser responsiveness increased by 9%.

Chrome for Android has also received several improvements, thanks to which the amount of memory consumed has been reduced by 5%, the launch speed has increased by 7%, and the speed of opening pages has increased by 2%. It is also noted that a tangible increase in performance and smoothness should be observed when using Chrome on devices with 8 GB of RAM and current versions of Android.
