Google Pixel Phones to Get Smarter About Overheating with Adaptive Thermal

Smartphone overheating is a common issue, especially during hot weather or intense usage. When a phone overheats, it can lead to performance slowdowns, battery damage, and even complete shutdowns. Recognizing this problem, Google is introducing a new feature called “Adaptive Thermal” for its Pixel phones. This innovative system aims to manage and mitigate overheating, ensuring a smoother and safer user experience. In this comprehensive article, we’ll explore the details of Adaptive Thermal, how it works, and additional tips for keeping your Pixel phone cool.

Understanding Adaptive Thermal

What is Adaptive Thermal?

Adaptive Thermal is a smart temperature management feature discovered in the code of Google’s Device Health Services app, thanks to a teardown by Android Authority. This feature functions silently in the background, continuously monitoring the battery temperature of Pixel phones and taking proactive measures to prevent overheating.

How Adaptive Thermal Works

Pre-emptive Alerts

One of the key functionalities of Adaptive Thermal is its ability to issue pre-emptive alerts. When the battery temperature reaches around 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit), the system sends a notification to the user. This alert not only informs users of the overheating issue but also provides immediate steps to cool down the device. Suggestions may include moving the phone out of direct sunlight, closing unused power-hungry applications, or relocating to a cooler environment.

Detailed Care Steps

Beyond basic warnings, Adaptive Thermal offers detailed care steps through a “See Care Steps” button within the notification. By tapping this button, users receive specific recommendations for cooling their Pixel phone. Actions may involve the phone temporarily reducing its processing speed to lower heat generation. Additionally, Adaptive Thermal might suggest disabling the 5G network, which consumes more power and contributes to heat. Improving air circulation around the phone, such as placing it on a flat surface or in a ventilated area, is another possible recommendation.

Constant Monitoring and Emergency State

Adaptive Thermal continuously monitors the battery temperature. If the temperature remains high and reaches 52 degrees Celsius (126 degrees Fahrenheit), the feature enters an “emergency” state. Although the exact actions in this state are not fully detailed, more aggressive cooling measures are likely implemented to protect the phone.

Shutdown Warning

As a last resort, if the battery temperature hits a critical level of 55 degrees Celsius (131 degrees Fahrenheit), Adaptive Thermal issues a 30-second warning before automatically shutting down the phone. This drastic measure is a necessary failsafe to prevent permanent damage from overheating.

User Tips for Keeping Your Pixel Cool

While Adaptive Thermal is a valuable tool, there are additional steps users can take to prevent their Pixel phones from overheating:

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Leaving your phone in direct sunlight can quickly raise its temperature. Whenever possible, keep your phone shaded, especially during hot days.

Manage Power-Hungry Apps

Applications such as games and video players can heavily tax your phone’s resources and generate significant heat. Close any apps you’re not actively using to help keep your phone cool.

Mind Your Environment

Using your phone in hot, stuffy environments can exacerbate overheating. Try to find cooler locations, like moving indoors with air conditioning or stepping into the shade.

FAQs

What is Adaptive Thermal on Google Pixel phones?

Adaptive Thermal is a smart temperature management feature for Google Pixel phones that monitors battery temperature and takes action to prevent overheating.

How does Adaptive Thermal work?

Adaptive Thermal works by issuing pre-emptive alerts when the phone’s temperature reaches a certain level, providing detailed care steps, continuously monitoring temperature, and taking emergency actions if necessary.

At what temperature does Adaptive Thermal issue a shutdown warning?

Adaptive Thermal issues a shutdown warning at around 55 degrees Celsius (131 degrees Fahrenheit) and will automatically shut down the phone if this temperature is reached.

What user actions can help prevent Pixel phone overheating?

To prevent your Pixel phone from overheating, avoid direct sunlight, manage power-hungry apps by closing those you’re not using, and use your phone in cooler environments.
