In total, about 67 million HDDs were shipped in the first quarter of 2020
Experts at Trendfocus analytic company summarized the preliminary results of the first quarter of 2020 in the hard disk drive market. According to their estimates, about 67 million HDDs were shipped during the reporting period. This is 14% less than in the previous quarter and 13% less in annual terms.
Hard drive shipments down 13% over the year
Enterprise-grade models – both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch – were in high demand due to their interest in cloud computing. As a result, a record number were shipped during the quarter – about 15.7 million units. It is noteworthy that the supply of high-performance models for the quarter decreased by 12%, to 4.2 million units. This is explained not only by the seasonal factor but also by the pressure in this segment from the SSD.
Approximately 23 million units were shipped with 3.5-inch drives for desktop PCs and consumer electronics – 20% less than in the previous quarter. Supplies of 2.5-inch drives for desktop PCs and consumer electronics were also shipped 20% less than in the previous quarter – about 24 million pieces. Analysts note that one of the factors in reducing supplies in all segments was the pandemic.
Regarding the distribution of the market, Seagate owns 42%, Toshiba – 21%, WDC – 37.0%.
