How Much Epic Games Paid for Borderlands 3 Exclusivity and First Nine Months of Giveaways Revealed
Litigation between Epic Games and Apple made public the previously confidential information about the amount that Epic Games paid for the exclusivity of 2K games and the first months of giveaways.
According to a document from October 2019, the deal with 2K cost Epic Games $ 146 million, and specifically Borderlands 3 – $ 115 million. This figure includes guaranteed sales ($ 80 million), advertising commitments ($ 15 million), and sunk fees ($ 20 million). …
In the first two weeks since its release, Borderlands 3 raised $ 100 million – $ 77 million directly through the Epic Games Store and $ 23 million through retail and resellers. Epic Games’ income from the sale of the game during this period amounted to $ 9.2 million.
The remaining $ 31 million (out of $ 146 million) after purchasing the Borderlands 3 exclusivity at Epic Games was spent on two other 2K projects: Borderlands: The Handsome Collection ($ 11 million) and Sid Meier’s Civilization VI global strategy ($ 20 million).
This is significantly more than Epic Games paid developers and publishers to add their games to the Giveaway, which ran on the Epic Games Store from December 2018 to September 2019.
As it turned out, the Batman: Arkham Collection ($ 1.5 million) was the most expensive for Epic Games, but it also turned out to be the most popular (almost 6.5 million activations). In total, over the specified period of time, the company spent about $ 104.5 million on distributions.
Earlier, from the Epic Games and Apple case documents, it became known about the conditions for activating crossplay on the PlayStation 4 for some Sony partners. The PC version of Dead Island 2 will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
