How to feed a billion? Artificial meat factory launched in China

While it can produce several tons of products per year, in a couple of years the volume will grow to hundreds of tons.

Shanghai-based cultured meat startup CellX has launched China’s first pilot plant. Artificial meat is obtained from cells in the laboratory, for its production it is not necessary to raise and slaughter animals. The first CellX plant is equipped with a 2,000-liter bioreactor that can produce tons of cultured meat per year, the company’s CEO said. According to him, the results of the pilot plant will be used to launch large-scale commercial production, which is scheduled to be completed by 2025. It will already be able to produce hundreds of tons of artificial meat per year.

The head of CellX also believes that the production of artificial meat on an industrial scale will significantly reduce its cost, and the launch of a large plant in 2025 will further reduce costs. In addition to providing meat products to the 1.4 billion people of China, the company also plans to enter the international market. Toward the end of this year, CellX is set to receive approval from food regulators in the US and Singapore to begin selling its cultured meats in those countries. At the moment, the sale of “test tube meat” is only allowed in these countries.
