Huawei and Honor devices will continue to receive Android updates

Last week, the license under which US companies supplied Huawei with software updates for the Chinese manufacturer’s devices ended. This raised concerns that Android devices from Huawei and its subsidiary Honor would no longer receive security and Google app updates. Now Huawei has announced that devices released before the imposition of US sanctions will continue to be updated in the same mode.

Thus, Huawei and Honor Android devices released with Google services and apps preinstalled will continue to receive regular updates. This applies to the products of the Chinese manufacturer, which were released until mid-May last year when US sanctions came into force prohibiting US companies from cooperating with Huawei and its subsidiaries. As for later devices, they come with Huawei Media Services, and AppGallery, a branded digital content store, is provided for updating applications.

“ Our customers will be able to continue to receive software updates and services through the power of the open-source community and our own research and development capabilities. For devices with pre-installed Google Play, all Google applications and products downloaded from the company’s branded store will continue to be updated. You can use the pre-installed Huawei AppGallery to manage apps and updates on devices that do not ship with Google Play, ”the Chinese company said in a statement.

The source notes that even smartphones released after the entry into force of US sanctions that do not have Google Play and Google Mobile Services installed continue to receive regular security updates. Just yesterday, the distribution of the August security update package for the Huawei P40 series smartphones launched in Europe began.
