Huawei has stocked up on enough chips to produce cell base stations

Guo Ping, chairman of Huawei, said the company has sufficient semiconductor stocks to build cellular base stations. The announcement was made during Huawei Connect 2020. According to TheElec, this is the first official confirmation from the Chinese tech giant that it massively purchased semiconductor products last year to better prepare for sanctions.

Recall that the tougher US sanctions against Huawei came into force on September 15. From now on, companies using US technology and software can no longer supply their products to Huawei without a special license, which can only be issued by the US government. Guo Ping acknowledged that the sanctions have seriously hampered the conduct of Huawei’s business, as the company requires millions of chips a year to manufacture smartphones and other products.

Huawei’s chairman said the company is looking for ways to overcome the current crisis. He also said that the Chinese tech giant would happily use Qualcomm chips if the company got permission to ship them from the US government. In addition, Huawei said it has reached 96 percent of its 5G rollout target by installing half a million base stations in 2020.
