Huawei Receives Patent for Extended Life Lithium Battery

Many factors affect the service life of lithium batteries, and one of them is structural changes in materials that inevitably occur both during chemical reactions during charging and discharging, and under the influence of physical processes in the battery. The material in the accumulator changes volume and deforms. Huawei promises to solve the problem with the stability of the battery material , which has developed a new composite and received a patent for it.

Huawei’s proprietary “silicon-carbon composite” is a graphite skeleton filled with amorphous carbon with evenly embedded silicon. The framework itself is porous, with pore sizes of no more than 50 nm, which prevents extensive contact of silicon in the composition of the material with the electrolyte. This inhibits the degradation of silicon in the course of chemical processes in the battery, and a strong frame and uniform distribution of silicon in it restrain “volumetric” expansion of the material and degradation from physical processes in the battery.

Huawei filed a patent for an invention on July 31, 2019. She announced the approval of the application yesterday. Significantly, the patent also presents a method for producing a composite material and a lithium battery based on it, so there is a chance that the invention will be implemented in commercial products as quickly as possible.
