The Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP) reactor began commercial operation on June 30 but has so far been operating at 90% of its capacity. It is the largest nuclear reactor in the country.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) is building two 700 MW pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs) at Kakrapar, where two 220 MW power plants are also located.

NPCIL plans to build 16 700 MW PHWRs across the country. Construction of 700 MW nuclear power plants is underway at Rawatbhat in Rajasthan (RAPS 7 and 8) and Gorakhpur in Haryana (GHAVP 1 and 2).
